Former Zanu PF MP and Lawyer Fined for Unprofessional Conduct
Cuthbert Mpame, a former Zanu PF MP and senior lawyer, has been slapped with a $1,000 fine by the Law Society of Zimbabwe for mishandling client trust funds. This ruling comes after Wisdom Mdzungairi, ex-NewsDay editor, complained about Mpame's handling of funds for a land purchase from Mpame's property firm ¹.
The Law Society of Zimbabwe found Mpame guilty of unprofessional conduct, violating the Legal Practitioners Code of Conduct. Specifically, he neglected to protect client money and engaged in conduct that could tarnish the legal profession's reputation.
Council secretary Lynda Mapara stated that Mpame failed to oversee his trust account properly, leading to a troubling precedent where trust funds were released to a third party based on verbal instructions.
Mpame was fined $500 for each of the two charges, payable within 30 days. Failure to pay may result in an eight-month suspension from practice.
This ruling underscores the importance of maintaining stringent ethical standards in the legal profession, serving as a warning to lawyers regarding client fund management.
